Day #43: Ground Isolation & Filling Board Finalization
Torstaina 29. lokakuuta 2009 · Mariusterve, i’m a bit late with my entry this time. reason is, that we needed to clean our old flat by this weekend and so i simply didn’t had the time to write an entry. the ground isolation continues as you can see. what needs to be done here is to put the windshield paper like a bath tube inside the filling floor between the wooden beams. i tried electric stapler to fix it… but this suckz. the real tool is the analog stapler with which you just hit the points and that’s it. it was also necessary now to close the filling floor completely, especially from the sides of the house. the picture shows you how it looks by the end of the day: there are no more open holes where insects can smuggle themselves in.
Day #42: Side Terrassi Finished & Ground Isolation
Keskiviikkona 28. lokakuuta 2009 · Mariusterve, today i’m late with my blogi entry. well… i did the terrassi on the site completely as well as the battens in front of the entrance. i did protect beams with TIKKURILA VALTTI BASE at this point. first i had to move some wood packages, so that i could access these places. this costed me a lot of time. actually as i had been below roof, i couldn’t use the crane for that anymore. well… so i did that by hand. also the windshield-paper installation on the floor started. see the pics for the prototype lane.
Day #41: Side Terrassi Finished & Start Of Isolation Work
Maanantaina 26. lokakuuta 2009 · Mariusterve, today has been a windy (and later a very rainy day). for some reason the weather forecast wasn’t that precise. speaking about achievements: the side terrassi is now finished as well. this allows now easy working, especially for the window staff which are scheduled for this friday now. it was also the goal to make the house accessable again from the front side. since today it has been a bid a small show-jumping course through the house (chicanes had been the isolation, the filling floor, osb-plates and the one and other temporary support beam (which had been left by HONKATALOT construction staff). but before i can clean everything up. i need to get the terrassi finished as a key part. in the afternoon the proceeding had been that far, that i could move the exterior panels (which had been sitting near entrance for two weeks now) to more into the direction of the main terrassi. this now allows installing the terrassi there without moving too much wood for no real reason.
we also got another visitor today: this has been a STEICO staff member. he introduced me into how to install STEICO canaflex. especially for this i’ve bought a helpful cool tool second hand: the BOSCH alligator. this is basically an electric saw of the professional series (don’t work with cheap crappy tools!). this tool has special saws to cut the STEICO canaflex like butter. it’s very helpful and speeds up working a lot. by that method i’ve been able to install the isolation just for test purposes in almost 2 hours on the northern wall for almost 80%. we’ll see more here within the next days.
Day #40: Main Terrassi Finished
Sunnuntaina 25. lokakuuta 2009 · Mariushello, today i’ve finished the main terrassi in front of the big windows. there are only a few more “screw jobs” which need to be done to fix all panels completely. in opposite to the weather report there had been no rain. i had beautiful sunny weather. i also purchased our liuskekivi today. well… they are second hand. actually it’s the waste some guy sold off as he is no longer needing those. of course they are polygonal. we won’t break with general philosophy here. the picture also show the excellent quality (?) of the iphone camera. my god… this is almost my beloved DSLR.
UPDATE: steffi has the better cam!
Day #39: Terrassi Will Be Done
Lauantaina 24. lokakuuta 2009 · Mariusterve, today i had been lucky with the weather. the job for today was to start finalizing the terrassi, so that window people can work safely next week. the terrassi is quite easy. to have it in line on one level with the plusvilla floor i first had to install another batten below the actual terrassi on top of the big wooden beams. those battens are 45 x 95 mm an pre-impregnated. here i’ve used - as previously mentioned - 16 mm stainless steel screws. on top of that the 28 x 95 mm terrassi floor boards will be installed. those again (no big surprise) with stainless steel screws… but here i don’t need expensive 16 mm. terrassi by the end of day already looked like this:
one last good feature i noticed: there has to be one batten installed directly to the house. that batten can easily be installed by normal users as HONKATALOTs factory people did precut the hirsi at this point so that the batten exactly fits. no huge measurement with water scales or any other effort. it simply fitted. that’s perfect! so hats of to the staff member in finland who did think about that! good job!
i could also welcome far away living visitors today: the famous “eagles” had been there being interested in first german plusvilla, flying in from far away. i showed them the plusvilla in all details and shared our love for good house design. the “eagles” had been very interested in an eco-friendly house w/o any industrial b/s in there. here HONKATALOT has one of its strength, as those criterias absolutely speak for their deliverables. btw, we also followed those principles by using eco-friendly STEICO canaflex isolation. it has a good price/value-ratio and is highly eco-friendly as insects or animals won’t have fun in there.
More infos about STEICO canaflex!
last but not least another lesson:
LESSON #563: “working tools can’t be cheap enough! nothing comes apart good tools!”
Day #38: Terrassi Construction Has Started, Isolation Arrived
Lauantaina 24. lokakuuta 2009 · Mariusterve, today i’ve started screwing the battens to the wooden beams. here it’s important to use screws made of stainless steel. i’ve been told this is an often made wrong beginners mistakes. people try to save money at the wrong place… and in the end they get more problems they would have ever gotten, just by saving some cents for a cheaper screw. well… we decided to go with stainless steel screws and are hopefully fine with those. in the afternoon parts of the isolation arrived. with parts i got to say that the first part has already been a big truck with a large trailer. we’ll be using cannabis for isolation (no, i’m not kidding). this is nature-friendly and has many good effects for our plusvilla (more details about this later). hey, and also the pictures will be back hopefully tomorrow. steffi did some pictures, but as we’ve been very busy this evening she didn’t find the time to upload. so please be patient: pics will be back tomorrow for sure.
Day #37: Kitchen Exhaust Arrived
Perjantaina 23. lokakuuta 2009 · Mariusterve, only a small msg today as it’s very late. i did spent my time today to take out the blind floor near entrance from below the house. as i had to work above my head this wasn’t that nice. some of the wooden elements did became wet and so they had been stiff between the wooden beams. luckily i had a helpful hammer as my friend. later jens from BAX joined us to introduce us to our kitchen exhaust. we had a brief check on site regarding the placement. i’ll continued the day with sawing the battens for the terrassi. tomorrow i will start screwing them onto the wooden beams. hopefully pics are back tomorrow when steffi might gonna take some (as my cam is broken). otherwise we’ll have to live with iphone camera => :-/
Day #36: Paint Job Finished
Torstaina 22. lokakuuta 2009 · Mariusterve, today i’ll finished paint job in last minute before darkness arrived. i did paint the northern wall for the whole day. in the afternoon an old friend of mine arrived to see the house the finnish people built. he is a home improvement interested guy and has been very interested in seeing the plusvilla. actually i’ll had to finish that task today as we are expecting maybe light rain for tomorrow.
parallel my neighbours did want to kill another tree. this time they got help from neighbour heinz. heinz used to work for the city services and arrived late in the afternoon with a baseball cap and a nato-olive plastic jacket looking like the captain of an aircraft carrier with the words: “when i’m finished here in a few seconds, there will be light!”. well… he did a great job, but for some reason the ladder has been a cheap production. when he started to saw with the chain saw the ladder broke (!) and he felt down for almost 5 meters from the tree (with the chain saw still running). he didn’t hurt hisself at all… however everyone had been shocked. well… heinz did stand up and immediately continued work w/o any complaints. that’s what i call i real man!
he had been very lucky as he felt on the sand jochen put there around the plusvilla. so at this point the plusvilla already did it’s first good job.
finally here are todays pics. unfortunately my canon ixus died with the last photo. it doesn’t move the objective anymore. what a bummer. well… finally this might be the moment now where we finally HAVE TO purchase a DLSR instead of another toy-camera like this one.

2x TIKKURILA VALTTI AKVACOLOR (#5089 = black tar)
Day #35: Paint It Black 2.0
Tiistaina 20. lokakuuta 2009 · Mariusterve, today i’ll continued the paint job with upper panels of front east fassade, followed by north fassade (the biggest area actually). it was very windy and ugly on the roof until afternoon when the wind reduced. as the wind was coming from south east it was pretty cold. i’ll finished when it became dark. the TIKKURILA Valtti Akvacolor looks really great and is pretty easy to paint. i also noticed that the wood HONKATALOT delivered doesn’t consume much colour. i’ve painted the whole fassades of house with round about only 10 liters. and believe me: it did not save any colour.
the images show you first the plusvilla with just one paint on. later the south and garden terrasse fassade is already painted the 2nd time.
